Bryan County Schools

Solar Eclipse – August 21, 2017

Bryan County Schools is excited for our students and staff to be able to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event. A quality education is essential for all our students, which is the reason we are using this tremendous event as an “intentional teaching” moment. It will provide an unforgettable learning experience for all our students.

Since safety is our priority, Bryan County Schools will delay dismissal of primary, elementary, middle and high school students by approximately 30 minutes on August 21, 2017. The peak time to experience the solar eclipse falls during our regularly scheduled school afternoon transportation and extracurricular times. This delayed dismissal will ensure that neither students nor employees are on the roadways during the time of the maximum eclipse. With a three-tier transportation system in place, it is not possible to transport all students home at the same time. Thus, all schools will be delayed in their dismissals to allow district transportation systems to work effectively and efficiently.

The actual level and type of participation will vary by school and grade (PK-12th).

All schools will follow normally scheduled start times on August 21, 2017.

  • Dismissal will be delayed by 30 minutes (busses, car riders, ASP, extracurricular, etc.)
  • Inside and outside educational activities are planned for this day.
  • Approved glasses will be provided by the school system for any planned outside activity.
  • Parents will be provided with an opt-out form they can sign and return to their child’s teacher if they don’t want their child to participate in any outside activity.
  • Schools will send more detailed information about their planned activities.
  • Considering many families are traveling on August 21, 2017, to see the full eclipse, all absences for August 21st will be excused.
